What is the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)? A parent's guide
The EYLF is the national framework that guides how educators plan learning for children from birth to school age. Here's what it means in real terms — not education jargon.
If you've toured a childcare centre in Berwick, Essendon, Narre Warren South, or anywhere else in Australia, you've probably heard the term EYLF — the Early Years Learning Framework. Educators refer to it constantly, it features in quality assessments, and it appears in centre documentation. But what does it actually mean for your child? This guide explains the framework in plain language, and what it looks like in practice at My Stars.
What the EYLF is
The Early Years Learning Framework — formally titled 'Belonging, Being and Becoming' — is Australia's national curriculum framework for early childhood education. It was developed by the Federal Government in partnership with early childhood experts and provides the foundation for how approved childcare and kinder services plan and document children's learning from birth to age 5. All NQS-approved services in Australia must demonstrate that their educational program aligns with the EYLF.
The framework is built on a core idea: that children are capable, curious, active learners who construct their own understanding of the world through play, relationships and experience. It does not prescribe a rigid curriculum. Instead, it provides five learning outcomes that educators use to plan, observe and reflect on each child's development.
The five learning outcomes
- Outcome 1 — Children have a strong sense of identity: children feel safe, secure and supported; they develop their emerging autonomy and growing sense of self
- Outcome 2 — Children are connected with and contribute to their world: they develop a sense of belonging to groups, communities and the natural environment
- Outcome 3 — Children have a strong sense of wellbeing: they take increasing responsibility for their own health and physical wellbeing
- Outcome 4 — Children are confident and involved learners: they develop curiosity, enthusiasm and a positive disposition towards learning
- Outcome 5 — Children are effective communicators: they interact verbally and non-verbally with others for a range of purposes
What this looks like in your child's day at My Stars
The EYLF is not a lesson plan — it's a lens through which educators observe what children are doing and plan what to offer them next. At My Stars Berwick and My Stars Essendon, every educator documents their observations of individual children against the EYLF outcomes. This documentation forms each child's learning journal, which you can access through OWNA.
In practical terms: when a toddler in our Rainbow Room spends 20 minutes carefully pouring water between containers, the educator isn't just supervising play — they're observing Outcome 4 (confident and involved learner), noting the child's concentration and problem-solving approach, and planning what materials to offer next to extend that interest. When children in the Green Room collaborate on building a block structure and negotiate roles, educators are observing Outcome 1 (strong sense of identity), Outcome 2 (connected with their world) and Outcome 5 (effective communicators) simultaneously.
EYLF v2.0
The EYLF was updated in 2022 with increased emphasis on children's voices, cultural responsiveness, and sustainability. My Stars Berwick and Essendon implement the current version across all programs.
Why it matters to you as a parent
A centre that genuinely implements the EYLF well does more than meet a compliance requirement. Children who experience high-quality, play-based early learning aligned with the framework enter school with stronger language, social skills, self-regulation and curiosity than those from centres where play is supervised but not intentionally extended. The research base behind the EYLF is substantial — and the quality of implementation varies enormously between centres.
When you read your child's OWNA observations, you'll see references to EYLF outcomes alongside the educator's notes. This is not box-ticking — it's how educators track your child's individual developmental journey and share it with you in a meaningful way.
