Choosing Care

How to choose a childcare centre in Berwick — 8 things to check before you enrol

With so many options across the Casey region, choosing the right childcare centre is harder than it sounds. Here are the 8 questions that cut through the noise.

Choosing a childcare centre is one of the most consequential decisions a family makes in the early years — and in Berwick, Narre Warren South, Officer, Clyde North and the broader Casey region, the number of options can be overwhelming. New centres open regularly, and they all have brochures with happy children and warm language. But the quality gap between an average centre and an exceptional one is real — and it shows up in your child's development, happiness, and how they transition to school. Here are the eight things that actually matter.

1. NQS rating — and what it really means

The National Quality Standard (NQS) rating is the single most objective quality indicator available to parents. Centres are assessed by ACECQA across seven quality areas and rated Significant Improvement Required, Working Towards, Meeting, or Exceeding. My Stars Berwick holds Meeting NQS — meaning our practice fully meets the national standard across all seven areas. When comparing centres in the Casey region, always ask for the current NQS rating and when it was last assessed. A rating from several years ago may not reflect the centre's current practice.

2. Staff consistency — the factor parents underestimate most

Children — especially under 3 — attach to consistent caregivers. A centre with high staff turnover means your child is continually adapting to new faces. When you tour, ask directly: what is your average educator tenure? Do children see the same lead educators week after week? At My Stars Berwick, we have educators who have been with us for many years, and we design our rosters to maximise consistency within each room.

3. The educational program — not just activities

Quality centres run a documented educational program aligned with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). This is not just 'craft on Tuesday and outdoor play on Thursday' — it's intentional, observation-led learning planning for each child. Ask to see a sample program. Ask how educators assess each child's development and how that feeds into the next week's planning. If the answer is vague, that tells you something.

4. Meals — chef-made or delivered?

Food quality in early childhood matters far more than many parents initially consider. Children who eat well at childcare have better concentration, mood and sleep. Some centres use delivered, reheated meals. My Stars Berwick employs an on-site chef who prepares fresh meals daily from a rotating menu. When you visit, ask to see a sample menu and ask where the food is prepared.

5. Communication — how will you know what your child did today?

A quality centre communicates meaningfully with parents every day — not just a summary at pickup, but documented observations, photos, and developmental notes. My Stars Berwick uses the OWNA parent app. Each day you receive updates from your child's room — learning observations, photos, meals eaten, sleep times. You can also message the room directly. Ask any centre you visit which platform they use and whether parents actually get daily updates.

6. Fees transparency — no surprises

Some centres are straightforward about their fees. Others have complex structures with additional charges for excursions, nappies, sunscreen or late pick-up that aren't immediately obvious. Before you commit, ask for a complete fee schedule, ask how CCS is applied to your statement, and ask what happens if you need to change your days. At My Stars Berwick, we explain the fee structure clearly and honestly — and we'll always tell you what your out-of-pocket cost is likely to be after CCS and Free Kinder.

7. Centre philosophy — does it align with yours?

Every quality centre has a guiding philosophy that shapes how educators interact with children, how decisions are made, and what the culture feels like. At My Stars, our B.R.I.G.H.T. values (Belonging, Respect, Integrity, Growth, Happiness, Trust) underpin everything — from how educators handle a disagreement between children to how they communicate with families. Ask any centre you're considering: what's your philosophy, and how does it show up in a typical day?

8. The tour — what to observe beyond the brochure

A tour is non-negotiable. On the tour, ignore the fresh paint and the new equipment for a moment and watch the people: Are the educators present with the children or distracted? Do children seem settled, engaged and comfortable? Are children who are upset being responded to warmly and promptly? Is the centre clean in the areas that matter — kitchens, nappy change areas, sleep rooms? Does the director know individual children's names? These things tell you more about a centre than any marketing material.

The best way to assess any centre is to see it in person. Tours at My Stars Berwick run weekday mornings — Pina or Sim will walk you through personally.
